The Dutch Connection

The Dutch Connection on the Scottish North Coast

Living in the Netherlands you would class yourself as quite lucky. I myself lived on the Netherlands border with Germany for 3 years and I loved those years. The people were fantastic and the lifestyle was so much better than that of the UK, although that was many moons ago. So it was a surprise to me when I came across Irma and Edwin De Jong, a couple who were born and bred in the Fabulous Netherlands.

After working in the Netherlands for about 25 years of in office jobs they thought that a change and a new direction in life, was what they needed. One thing that came to mind was their past Holidays and the times spent in Scotland, and to them, it was an obvious choice that coming to Scotland felt more like a homecoming, than starting a new life in a foreign country. On each visit and each holiday the feeling of being home was very strong and they decided to do just that, come Home. In 2017 they decided to search for a B&B and make a new life in the highlands and it wasn't long before they came across the perfect one. They travelled to Stoer which by coincidence in Dutch means, 'Brave' and that was exactly what they were doing, being 'Brave' and to change their entire lifestyle, and come to Scotland, and take on a new challenge leaving behind the Dutch lifestyle their  Family and friends. Although it is early days but it is more than obvious that they both have fallen in love with Scotland, their Work and their new friends, knowing that this was meant to be. And the B&B they had chosen could not have been better. The Green Cruachan is located in Stoer (Assynt), 8 miles North of Lochinver, in the North West Highlands directly located on the populair tourist route, The North Coast 500.

Their B&B, is a former manse, and is now a comfortable four-bedroom guesthouse. Each room is individual, and has been tastefully refurbished to reflect the Scottish style. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, and have the usual facilities, like coffee and tea, free WiFi in all the rooms and a television. A maximum of two people can sleep in our luxury rooms and we accommodate guests older than 18. We have a cosy residents lounge with a fireplace, where you can relax after a lovely walk or drive along the North Coast 500. To say it is situated in a Scenic area of the Highlands is an understatement. This area is just the Highlands through and through. It is a Great place to be based at with so much within easy reach of the B&B.

What to see and do, well the list is endless, you could easily spend a week or so based here and be able to do something different each day.   Try your hand at Sea Kayak & Canoeing on the Remote and Rugged Coastline and Lochs or go around Handa Island or The Old Man of Stoer.
