Wick Voices

Wick

It was a pleasant but fabulous surprise to read about another voice added to whats called Wick VoicesWick Voices the Wick Society's Oral History Section embarked on an ambitious long-term project aimed at collecting and preserving memories and information from the pastThis will be social history in its most natural form - as told by the people who have lived itWick Voices is a truly intergenerational project working closely with school pupils and older family membersThis to me when I first read about was a terrific idea and something that should be copied throughout the country to allow future generations to learn orally about their town and how it once wasSo today I found out that the latest Voice is that of Willie Watt a chap I knew with whilst growing up with in Wick. We played many times over the years and could probably fill one of these voices just about our own childhood adventures aloneI have learnt about Willie and his business exploits over the years and even to the point of him being awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours list. He must be very proud about his achievements as I amSo to hear him being part of the Wick Voices where he speaks about the Harbour in Wick which is not only close to his Heart but mine also was very exctiingAnother reason for posting about Willie is to tell everyone who flies down the East coast without spending time exploring what it has to offer is that they are making a big mistakeThe West is best and to that I agree but only in terms of Scenery. For History Culture and so much more you do need to spend as much time in the East as you would in the West if not more because there is so much more to see and doA stop at the Wick Heritage Museum will allow visitors the chance to realise just what this Northern part of Britain has had to offer in its Past and it future tooThe Museum is possibly one of the Best of its kind in the Whole of Scotland and has a wealth of information about the days gone by and the History and Culture of Wick and beyondWe recently did a Top Ten places to Visit ion the Route and the Heritage Centre was No 7So to me hearing Willie just made me think that I have to make a post and get folk not only to stop at Wick and Learn about how why what where the people and the Town came from but why it is important to learn about a place not just seek the picturesque places for a photoSo stop at Wick and I can sure you the Heritage Centre will make you stop worth very minuteOh and Don't Forget to listen to my Old Pal Willie
